The Retiro park is undoubtedly the most emblematic park in Madrid, because of its large size, its location in the heart of Madrid, and especially for its unique beauty and the various elements that compose it. Its origin dates from the reign of Philip IV, when the initiative of the minister the Count-Duke of Olivares, a series of land for the use and enjoyment of the royal family, and built within it a number of palaces, ponds and gardens for the amusement of kings. Currently, the Retiro Park is one of the most beautiful in the world, and is a place where you can visit important art exhibitions (two of his palaces are used by the Reina Sofia Museum for temporary exhibitions), go with children to see theatre, take a boat ride on the pond, make a seer read our future or just relax at any bank under the shade of any tree.

El Escorial Monastery

The Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a palace complex, basilica and monastery. Commonly known as the Monastery of El Escorial, the palace was the residence of the Spanish Royal Family, the basilica is the burial place of the kings of Spain and the current home monastery of the friars of the Order of St. Augustine. It is one of the most unique Renaissance architecture in Spain and Europe. Located in San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid), occupies an area of 33,327 m², on the southern slope of Mount Abantos, to 1,028 m altitude in the Sierra de Guadarrama. Also known as the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Monasterio de San Lorenzo El Real, or simply as El Escorial, was devised in the second half of XVI century by King Philip II and his architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, but later intervened Juan de Herrera, Juan de Mijares, Gian Battista Castello Bergamasco and Francisco de Mora. Was considered, since the late sixteenth century, the Eighth Wonder of the World, both in size and functional complexity for its enormous symbolic value. Its architecture plateresque paced Renaissance classicism. Massive work of great monuments, not only is a perfect building plots, but also a huge receptacle of the other arts.

La Granja de San Ildefonso

A mere 11 Km away from Segovia, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains, set in unique natural surroundings stands the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, a grand and impressive complex, built on the site of an old hostel run by the Hieronymite monks from the Monasterio del Parral monastery in Segovia.Work began on the palace in 1721. In 1724 Philip V retired there in the hope of creating a royal residence after the style of the court at Versailles. To this end, the following twenty years were spent enlarging the gardens and the palace, which was used as a summer residence by Philip's successors up to the reign of Alfonso XIII. Several different architects had a hand in its building, such as Teodoro Ardemans and Juan Bautista Sachetti, who managed to achieve a marvellous blend of Spanish Baroque and the French style, in addition to a subtle Italian touch. The remains of the King, along with those of his wife, Isabel de Farnesio, are kept in the collegiate church. The visit to the palace includes a tour of dazzling rooms, the period decoration of which has been preserved, as well as paintings by Panini and 17th century Flemish works, not to mention beautiful tapestries on show in the museum, where the 16th century Apocalypse series is also on display. The palace is surrounded by magnificent gardens containing a wide variety of plants and adorned with statues and 26 fountains, some of the spouts of which produce 40 m high jets, as is the case of those of the La Fama fountain. The site is completed with the La Granja Royal Glass Factory, an 18th century building that is home to a permanent exhibition, as well as other temporary ones, dedicated to the difficult art of glass-making.

Castles are another common sight throughout the province of Segovia, including those of Coca, Cuéllar and Pedraza. The province is also home to a nature reserve. The highlight of the local gastronomy is the famous roast suckling pig, but Segovia also well-known for its kidney beans, milk-fed lamb and its excellent cured sausages such as the chorizo from Cantimpalos.
