The Royal Opera House Muscat, located in Shatti Al Qurum district, is the leading arts and culture organization in the Sultanate and puts a modern twist on traditional Omani architecture. All sorts of performances are held at the opera house, including classic European operas, traditional performances and orchestral evenings. The structure is equally as impressive as the performances held within, and indeed it is one of the most breathtaking architectural masterpieces in the Sultanate. A gleaming, bright series of terraced towers greet visitors in the day, but it is at night when the Opera House really comes into its own, as perfectly positioned spotlights give the archways and towers a luminous appearance. All this creates a brilliant contrast against the night sky, and the whole site is made even more amazing by the polished, reflective marble courtyards that lead up to the structure.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the main mosque in the Sultanate of Oman, showcasing traditional Arab architecture and insights on the Arab culture, featuring a huge, 20,000-piece library. A stunning building crafted from beautiful, white sandstone, the mosque has five minarets and a huge central dome – the surfaces of which are intricately decorated with classic geometric designs. The Mosque also features the second-largest hand-woven carpet in the world. Taking four years to be produced, it contains 1,700,000,000 knots and weighs 21 tonnes. Another major feature of the interior design is the chandelier above the praying hall – some 14 meters tall, it was manufactured by the lauded Italian chandelier maker, Faustig.

Visiting the Muttrah Souq will guarantee to explore the essence of Muscat, where you can experience the dynamism of the typical Omani day-to-day life. It is one of the oldest markets in Oman, dating back about two hundred years. Its antiquity increased the extent of its beauty, magic, and allure over the past centuries. Visitors can enter the market from a gate facing the Sea of Oman and Mutrah Corniche. The souq ends with another gate in the city’s old quarters, which usually receive the majority of visitors coming from other Omani towns and villages. While you are passing through, aromatic smells of incense and Arabian perfumes fill the air. Well known for its handicrafts like silverware, daggers, traditional wear, as well as famous Omani sweets (Halwa), and spices, Muttrah Souq is the perfect place to find the souvenirs you were looking for.

One of the most recognisable structures in Oman, Al Alam Palace is an absolute must-visit for any traveller. Al Alam is the palace of Sultan Qaboos, located deep in Old Muscat, and has gradually been built over the past two centuries. Today’s façade dates back to 1972 and is a beautiful example of modern Islamic architecture. With its beautiful use of vibrant colours and curvaceous form, the structure is unlike any other in the world. The lush garden surroundings and the picture-perfect boulevard leading up to the palace both make it one of Muscat’s most admirable locations. The Al Alam Palace is bordered by Al Jalali and Al Mirani fortresses, each built in the 16th century to protect Oman from invasion. The proximity of the three landmarks to one another will cater for an exciting and interesting day out.
