For Shoppers M Street is the main drag through the historic Georgetown neighborhood. Take the time to stroll along the street and stop in shops to fit any budget. There are plenty of chain stores like Kate Spade New York, Kiehls, H&M, and Banana Republic. If you turn left or right onto Wisconsin Ave NW, you’ll run into Nine West, Tory Burch, the Apple Store, Tumi Luggage, and Gap. Off Wisconsin Ave NW, there are side streets and alleyways full of local shops. For the fun of it, stop at Crumb & Whiskers, a cat café for shoppers and tourists in need of a furry hug. For Runners Washington, D.C. has a landscape that is tailor-made for runners. The terrain is relatively flat, so it’s easy to put in a few miles before your brunch date. Best of all, runners pass some of the city’s most notable sights. You can run a 3-mile circuit along the Potomac River from Georgetown to the Lincoln Memorial. Or, if you want to run a few more miles, keep running along the National Mall until you get to the Capitol Building or the Washington Monument. Remember to bring your phone with you, as chances are you will want to snap a few photos while you stop to catch your breath.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was started in 1828 as a dream of passage to Western wealth. Operating for nearly 100 years, the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. After closing due to competition from the railroads and the destruction of floods, the area languished in disrepair until it became a target for a parkway in the 1950s. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas rallied support for developing the canal as a linear park, and in 1971, it became a National Historical Park.
