St. George Street in St. Augustine is the premier street in the nation's oldest city, a thoroughfare where pedestrians can stroll unencumbered by vehicle or even bicycle traffic. On the narrow avenue, boutiques, bistros, galleries and gift shops are tucked into cubbyhole-sized storefronts.
Opportunities to buy saltwater taffy, gummy gators and dolphin-shaped molded chocolate abound in the Historic District. But if you're looking for something sweet that is distinctively St. Augustine's, head to Whetsone Chocolates. Northeast Florida natives Henry and Esther Whetstone launched their company in 1967 with a single fudge recipe produced in their kitchen and soon expanded both their array of chocolates and their production digs. Today, the company remains in the hands of their daughter, and the chocolate – including a new assortment of artisan chocolates – remain a sweet addition to St. George Street.
A Shipyard Playground for children is just one of the many options for family fun at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum.
Other fun things to do for kids include:
WRECKED! exhibit tablets with a game about finding a shipwreck and artifacts underwater.
1874 Lighthouse Tower (self-guided climb up the 219-step spiral staircase for those 44 inches and taller)
1876 Keepers’ House: At Home with the Harns
Nation’s Oldest Port® Demos (interactive demonstrations)
Maritime Hammock Nature Trails & Scavenger Hunt
Maritime Education Center with hands-on children’s activities: Wooden climb-in lighthouse, puppets, etch-a-sketch, and viewfinders
Conservation Lab and PGA Viewing Window
Prepare yourself for a Frightseeing Adventure like none other as your resident Ghost Host shares tales both true and truly unnerving of the city’s tumultuous past. Discover the secrets of the Tolomoto Cemetery and the apparition seen playing on the sacred grounds after dark. Could it be the spirit of five-year old James or is it the Ghost Bride, still waiting for her walk down the aisle. Be sure to keep a watchful eye while passing by the old City Gates. You might catch a glimpse of Elizabeth, a child victim of the yellow fever, waving to passersby. And face your fears in the exclusive nighttime experience at Potter’s Wax Museum’s Chamber of Horrors… Plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early to make time to visit Cromwell’s Parlour of Paranormal Curiosities.
Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, the original site of the Nation’s oldest city. Located in the area first explored by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 and settled by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565, historic St. Augustine is the oldest successful European settlement in the United States. Colonial America started right HERE, 55 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, and 42 years before Jamestown! With a long, rich history spanning nearly 500 years, the Fountain of Youth Park will delight and amaze you. Whether you visit for an hour or take all day, our 15 waterfront acres will provide you with hours of enjoyment.
