ワシントンD.C. にあるアメリカ合衆国議会議事堂は、アメリカ国民と政府の象徴であり、国の立法府である米国議会の会合の場でもあります。国会議事堂は現役のオフィスビルですが、アメリカや世界中からの訪問者がアメリカの民主主義について学ぶために訪れる場所でもあります。
国会議事堂の建設は1793年に始まりました。1800年11月、議会は米国議会図書館、最高裁判所とともに、新しく完成した北棟に移転しました。南棟は1807年までに完成しましたが、1814年にイギリス軍が1812年の米英戦争で国会議事堂を焼き払いました。現在の国会議事堂の中央部は1826年に完成しました。
