Did you know that the Woodward Dream Cruise actually started as a small fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan? In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway. That year, 250,000 people participated—nearly ten times the number expected. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe—from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the former Soviet Union. Pennington, the buildings that have become the core of Iron City Birmingham have had a long history in the auto industry and left a lasting impression on the Southside landscape. Our historic location was considered one of the most modern car facilities of its time. It is fitting that Iron City’s reconstruction was driven by another entrepreneur in the car business, Steve DeMedicis. In the design by Williams Blackstock Architects, two connected buildings underwent extensive renovation and construction in a two-floor layout that includes three concert stages, state of the art sound system, two bars and a restaurant. Very friendly and helpful staff. They were always accommodating. Everything is very upscale. The rooms and facilities are all excellent. Another great thing about the hotel is it's location. It is located in Downtown Birmingham. This makes it only a short walk to numerous restaurants, bars, and specialty shops"
