Maratea is a pretty, medieval town, small and compact, typically Italian with narrow, cobbled streets, piazzas, numerous bars and restaurants and some unusual little shops. Visitors can buy local food specialities, wine, antiques, and local crafts, including ceramics and lace. The town nestled comfortably into the side of Monte San Biagio (644 metres above sea level). It is known as the town of 44 churches, but only 11 are in the town, the rest are spread around the area classed as Maratea.

Strazzanti was created by the 3 Strazzanti sisters with our youngest sister & professional Chef Emilia leading the experiences directly in Sicily. We continue the story and memories of our grandparents who taught us everything about our Sicilian and Neapolitan heritage. Growing up we understood our Italian heritage through them as people, their stories and by sharing, eating and cooking the dishes that they grew up with from their homeland and using the ingredients that our relatives would send to us in England from Sicily & Naples in small parcels. When our grandparents left us, it reinforced as a family that what they taught and shared with us is a huge part of our cultural identity, and we could not risk that heritage disappearing. Together as a family and working with other Sicilian families our passion is to give back to the land and work with like-minded young entrepreneurs, landowners and farmers in Sicily to keep this heritage and Sicilian traditions, which we all lovingly grew up with, alive.

In the early 1950s, members of the entrepreneurial Rivetti family from Piedmont came to Maratea, were struck by its indescribable beauty and changed its destiny forever. Thanks to the forward-thinking Count Stefano Rivetti, the Santavenere Hotel was opened in 1953 and immediately gained an international reputation as a Lucanian “gem”. The entrancing Gulf of Maratea has inspired the words of great artists such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Domenico Modugno, and cast its spell on directors who have used it as the setting for fantastic films starring world famous actors, from Anita Ekberg to Peppino De Filippo, as well as prominent figures like Luciano de Crescenzo, Indro Montanelli, the Prince and Princess of Liège and Pat Metheny.
