Both Shikotsu and Toya lakes were formed from collapses from a volcanic activity. Toya lake region also features Mount Usu, an active volcano last erupted in 2000 while Shikotsu region showcase few mountains inclusive of Mount Tarumae, one of Japan’s most active volcano last erupted in 1981.
