Art and culture at the Royal Academy

Museum
10 mins
The Royal Academy of Arts is one of Britain’s most prestigious cultural institutions, founded in 1768 with the support of King George III. Located in Burlington House, it was established to promote the creation, enjoyment, and appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, education, and debate. Its first president, Joshua Reynolds, helped shape its early direction by emphasizing artistic training and the importance of classical techniques. Unlike many institutions, the Academy is run by practicing artists and architects, known as Royal Academicians, who are elected by their peers. Today, the Royal Academy is best known for its annual Summer Exhibition, one of the oldest open-submission art exhibitions in the world, which showcases a wide range of contemporary works from emerging and established artists alike. Beyond exhibitions, it offers educational programs, lectures, and workshops aimed at engaging the public with art in meaningful ways. The institution continues to balance tradition with innovation, hosting major international shows while supporting new artistic voices, making it a vital part of the cultural landscape in the London art scene.

Chelsea Flower Show

Chelsea Flower Show

Recreation
2 mi
Chelsea Flower Show has been hosted in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, a majestic retirement home for veterans of the British Army with Grade II listed grounds, since 1912. One of the most famous years for the show was in 1937, when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth celebrated their coronation year. As a result, the Chelsea Flower Show staged an Empire exhibition, with plants and trees brought in from as far afield as Australia and East Africa. Chelsea Flower Show has become synonymous with royalty, as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 led to another celebratory show, and most members of the royal family attended. Nowadays, the show is as popular as it ever was. As well as members of the royal family making regular appearances every year, the show is also attended by more than 150,000 people from across the world. It's widely believed even more people would attend if they could, but the limited number of tickets are in high demand and must be bought in advance. Various awards are presented to exhibitors at the show every year, ranging from floral arrangement trophies to Best Show Garden awards. Award winners continue to enjoy even more success in their careers, thanks to the prestige associated with the Chelsea Flower Show.

A journey through Chinatown

A journey through Chinatown

Recreation

London’s Chinese community first formed in the early twentieth century in Limehouse in East London. After post war redevelopment, the community gradually moved to Soho where today’s Chinatown grew into a thriving cultural centre. Traditional architecture, symbolic red lanterns and the impressive paifang gate on Wardour Street, created in China and assembled in London, celebrate a proud heritage while embracing the energy of modern London. What to See and Do in Chinatown Taste Your Way Through Authentic Cuisine Chinatown is one of London’s most celebrated food destinations. Enjoy handmade dumplings, steamed bao, fragrant noodle dishes, roast duck and a wide choice of regional specialities. Bakeries filled with fresh buns and pastries add even more temptation. Admire the Iconic Gates and Lanterns The ornate paifang gates are among Chinatown’s most photographed landmarks, each one reflecting traditional Chinese design and symbolism. The lantern filled streets create a festive atmosphere throughout the year. Discover Unique Shops Browse specialist stores filled with imported snacks, loose leaf teas, herbal remedies, beauty products and distinctive gifts that are not found elsewhere in London. Immerse Yourself in Culture Chinatown often hosts cultural demonstrations and experiences, including calligraphy workshops and tea tastings. During Lunar New Year the area comes alive with lion dances, parades and celebrations that attract visitors from across the city.
Discover Shepherd Market

Discover Shepherd Market

Shopping
10 mins
Shepherd Market was originally designed between 1735 and 1746 by architect Edward Shepherd. The land had once hosted the lively May Fair, the event that ultimately gave the wider neighbourhood its name. Shepherd transformed the area into an elegant little village, complete with paved alleys, a duck pond, a theatre and a two-storey market building. Although the old market structure has long since disappeared, the character of the place has remained. Over the centuries, it has shifted from its fair-ground origins to a bohemian hub beloved by artists and writers, and today it retains that creative spirit. Part of the market’s enduring appeal is its atmosphere. Despite being in the heart of Mayfair, it has a distinctly village-like feel, with narrow passages, historic shopfronts and leafy corners that offer a sense of calm. Independent galleries, jewel-box boutiques and small restaurants sit alongside classic London pubs, making it an inviting place for both leisurely wandering and spontaneous discoveries. It is the kind of neighbourhood that rewards slow strolling and unhurried exploration. Guests of The Athenaeum are perfectly placed to enjoy everything Shepherd Market has to offer. Iconic spots include Ye Grapes, a Victorian pub dating back to 1882, and The Kings Arms, which has existed in one form or another since the 18th century. Around the square, you’ll also find relaxed wine bars, alfresco cafés, contemporary galleries and speciality shops, ideal for browsing between museum visits or pausing after a day in the city. Shepherd Market expresses so much of what we value at The Athenaeum, a true London spirit, a connection to culture, pockets of refuge in the midst of the urban rush, and a refined sense of style. Whether you are seeking a quiet corner for a glass of wine, a memorable piece of art, or simply a beautiful place to wander, this hidden Mayfair village offers a warm welcome and a gentle contrast to the city’s grand boulevards.
