Das Gebäude stammt aus dem Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts und ist Teil der historischen Villa de Madrid (Stadt Madrid). Es wurde im bebauten Gebiet der Stadt errichtet, nachdem die Mauer, die die Stadtgrenzen begrenzt, während der Regierungszeit von Felipe IV. abgerissen wurde. Die im neoklassizistischen Stil erbaute Fassade ist heute eine der spektakulärsten und am häufigsten fotografierten Sehenswürdigkeiten in der berühmten Calle Atocha und damit auch im bekannten Barrio de Las Letras, dem Geburtsort vieler bekannter spanischer Schriftsteller des Goldenen Zeitalters.
