About us

Since its 1894 founding in the alpine resort town of Karuizawa, Mampei Hotel has welcomed a distinguished roster of guests to its stately spaces. Whether you stay in the main Alps building, a grand mountain lodge designed by Gonkuro Kume and erected in 1936, or one of the later additions offering contemporary touches, you are promised all the comforts of Mampei’s traditional luxury. The only way to find out about it was via word of mouth. No address was given, the only clue being a sign placed in the window, “Cocktails Here”. A lot of people thought it was pretty cool, even before The New York Times wrote about it. But that was all pre-pandemic, and this is a new era.
