Van de steden en dorpen aan de Costa Brava onderscheidt Cadaqués zich door zijn echtheid en eigenheid. De naam Cadaqués zou het gevolg kunnen zijn van de evolutie van „Cap de Quers” (Rocks Cape) vanwege de grote hoeveelheid rotsen, vooral in het gebied van Cap de Creus. Een andere mogelijkheid is dat Cadaqués is afgeleid van „cadaquer” of „cadaquers” (bos van càdecs: struik van dit kustgebied). Een derde mogelijkheid is dat Cadaqués een combinatie is van twee woorden van Griekse oorsprong, kata-kairus, af en toe een haven (aangezien de Grieken deze haven gebruikten op hun handelsroutes toen ze door slecht weer de overtocht moesten onderbreken).
Gelegen op het oostelijke deel van het schiereiland Cap de Creus, heeft de stad, die wordt beschouwd als de parel van de Costa Brava, een geschiedenis van duizenden jaren die teruggaat tot de Iberische periode.
