Historisch monument
De Via Francigena is de algemene naam van een oude weg en pelgrimsroute die van Frankrijk naar Rome loopt, hoewel meestal wordt aangenomen dat het startpunt veel verder weg ligt, in de Engelse kathedraalstad Canterbury. De route loopt dus door Engeland, Frankrijk, Zwitserland en Italië. De route stond in Italië bekend als de „Via Francigena” („de weg die uit Frankrijk komt”) of de „Via Romea Francigena” („de weg naar Rome die uit Frankrijk komt”). [1] In de middeleeuwen was het een belangrijke weg en pelgrimsroute voor diegenen die de Heilige Stoel en de graven van de apostelen Petrus en Paulus wilden bezoeken.
