De Outer Alster is omgeven door eeuwenoude bomen, groene parken en prachtige herenhuizen in de districten Winterhude, St. Georg en Rotherbaum, die het gebied een verfijnde, voortreffelijke charme geven. Mensen komen er om het stressvolle stadsleven even achter zich te laten en te ontspannen in de schaduw van de bomen. In de zomer zijn de parken rondom het meer een geweldige plek om te grillen (een nationale sport), te genieten van de zonnestralen of te gaan joggen rond het meer. Sportievelingen doen aan watersporten. Op veel plekken rondom de Alster zijn boten, kano's en kajaks te huur. Stand-up paddling is ook een leuke en zeer populaire activiteit.

De Elbphilharmonie met zijn indrukwekkende glazen gevel en golfachtige dak rijst op uit het voormalige Kaispeicher-gebouw op de westelijke punt van de HafenCity. Binnenin bevinden zich twee concertzalen, een hotel en woonappartementen. Tussen het oude pakhuis en de glazen structuur bevindt zich de Plaza - een openbare kijkruimte die zich rondom het hele gebouw uitstrekt.

136,6 miljoen ton vracht passeerde in 2019 de kademuren van de grootste zeehaven van Duitsland. Dat omvatte ongeveer 9,3 miljoen standaardcontainers (TEU). Hamburg is daarmee de derde grootste containerhaven in Europa en staat op de 17e plaats op de lijst van's werelds grootste containerhavens.

Het drijvende dok, genaamd „Landungsbrücken” (aanlegsteigers), is 700 meter lang. Vanaf dit waterstation vertrekken haventochten en de HADAG-stoomboten naar Finkenwerder, Oevelgönne en Blankenese. Indrukwekkende luxe cruisers meren hier ook van tijd tot tijd aan.
Als je hier staat - het water aan de ene kant, en aan de andere kant kleurrijke souvenirwinkels met herinneringen aan het water en schilderachtige visrestaurants met verse kotterschol of Noordzeegarnalen - vergeet je gemakkelijk dat je op een drijvend platform loopt. De eerste pontons werden gebouwd in 1839 en dienden als dokken voor stoomschepen omdat de steenkool die ze nodig hadden voor hun motoren hier kon worden opgeslagen. Op dezelfde manier werd de brand in de ketels, als potentieel gevaar, ver van de eigenlijke haven gehouden. Van 1907 tot 1909 werd de faciliteit sterk uitgebreid - en zwaar beschadigd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het huidige piergebied bestaat al sinds de wederopbouw van 1953 tot 1955, en ooit reed er een auto met extreem hoge snelheid over de bruggen voor een filmthriller. De watertoren aan de oostkant van het waterstation toont de tijd en het waterpeil en luidt ook elk half uur de scheepsbel.

De prachtige neogotische baksteenarchitectuur van Speicherstadt vormt een spannend contrast met de moderne staal- en glasconstructies van het naburige HafenCity.
