Het Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was het enige gebouw dat nog overeind stond in het gebied waar de eerste atoombom ontplofte op 6 augustus 1945. Het heiligdom speelt in op de contrasten in kleur en vorm tussen bergen en zee en illustreert het Japanse concept van landschappelijke schoonheid, dat natuur en menselijke creativiteit combineert.
