Het Museum, voormalig Wax Museum „Luigi Cattaneo” - Museum voor anatomie en pathologische histologie „C. Taruffi”, bevat een collectie anatomische wasmodellen uit de 19e eeuw van de Florentijnse modelleur Clemente Susini en van wasmodelbouwers uit Bologna, waarvan Giuseppe Astorri en Cesare Bettini de belangrijkste zijn. Het historische moment van de Bolognese school was het moment waarop de leraar anatomie onderzoek begon te doen naar de variaties, misvormingen, teratologie en vormveranderingen veroorzaakt door de verschillende ziekten, en toen hij ook wasmodellen begon te maken die in verhouding stonden tot de normale morfologie. Naast deze wasmonsters worden gedroogde exemplaren van de onderzochte koffer tentoongesteld, die zeer nuttig zijn als leermiddel, samen met afdrukken van de originele tekeningen, die de werkwijze van de anatomen van die periode illustreren.

De collectie schilderijen begon in 1796 en had haar eerste kern in de werken afkomstig van kerken en kloosters die door het Napoleontische bestuur werden afgeschaft. In 1808 werd de collectie verplaatst naar de huidige locatie, het voormalige St. Ignazio-klooster aan de Via Belle Arti. Na de val van Napoleon in 1815 kreeg de Picture Gallery bijna alle schilderijen die door de Napoleontische regering van de stad naar Parijs en Milaan waren verplaatst. Tegen het midden van de 19e eeuw werden er veel belangrijke kunstwerken aan de collectie toegevoegd omdat de religieuze ordes werden afgeschaft en de pasgeboren Italiaanse staat eigenaar werd van een groot deel van hun kunstschatten. Met de reorganisatie van de collectie werd de Picture Gallery een van de belangrijkste galerieën in Europa, niet alleen wat de barokke Bolognese schilderkunst betreft.
