Het hotel werd in 1909 voltooid door Freelan Oscar Stanley en was oorspronkelijk een bestemming voor de rijken om te „zomers” in de bergen. F. O. en zijn vrouw Flora kwamen uit Kingfield, Maine. F. O. verdiende samen met zijn identieke tweelingbroer, Francis Edgar, hun aanvankelijke fortuin door het nieuwe fotografieproces van droge platen op de markt te brengen. Het verkortte het ontwikkelingsproces van dertig minuten naar één.
