De Dam ligt in het historische centrum van Amsterdam, ongeveer 750 meter ten zuiden van het belangrijkste vervoersknooppunt, het Centraal Station, op de oorspronkelijke locatie van de dam in de rivier de Amstel. Het is ongeveer rechthoekig van vorm en strekt zich ongeveer 200 meter uit van west naar oost en ongeveer 100 meter van noord naar zuid. Het verbindt de straten Damrak en Rokin, die langs de oorspronkelijke loop van de Amstel lopen van het Centraal Station naar het Muntplein (Muntplein) en de Munttoren (Munttoren). De Dam markeert ook het eindpunt van de andere veelbezochte straten Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat en Damstraat. Op korte afstand voorbij de noordoostelijke hoek ligt de belangrijkste rosse buurt: de Wallen.
