Gelegen in het hart van Buckinghamshire, op iets meer dan een uur rijden van het centrum van Londen, is Waddesdon een van Europa's laatst overgebleven eigendommen in 'le style Rothschild', een bewijs van de gloriedagen van de familie Rothschild — en dat alles wat gastvrijheid verpersoonlijkt. Ontworpen door Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur en gebouwd tussen 1874 en 1885, bouwde Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild Waddesdon als een weekendverblijf om vrienden en familie te ontvangen en zijn uitzonderlijke kunstcollectie tentoon te stellen. Ferdinands 'zaterdag tot maandag'-feesten, waar uitzonderlijk eten en wijn werd geserveerd, werden legendarisch. Gasten waren onder meer koningshuizen, politici en beroemde artistieke en literaire figuren.
