Het legendarische Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois is een van de oudste hotels in Europa, even beroemd om zijn afkomst als om zijn vriendelijke gastvrijheid. De locatie aan de oevers van de rivier de Rijn in het stadscentrum is uniek. Geniet van voortreffelijke mediterrane creaties in het gastronomische restaurant Cheval Blanc van Peter Knogl van het hotel (3 Michelin-sterren/19 GaultMillau-punten) of de charme van onze authentieke Franse Brasserie Les Trois Rois (14 GaultMillau-punten). De bar biedt de hele dag door een informele sfeer en nodigt gasten uit met heerlijke cocktails en snacks. De oprichting van het Vitra Design Museum dateert uit het begin van de jaren tachtig. Om de geschiedenis van het bedrijf Vitra te documenteren, begon Rolf Fehlbaum, CEO van Vitra, meubels te verzamelen van ontwerpers die invloed hadden gehad op de ontwikkeling van het bedrijf, zoals Charles en Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto en Jean Prouvé. Naarmate de collectie groeide, groeide ook de wens naar een architecturale locatie waar de objecten konden worden tentoongesteld. In 1986 ontwikkelde Fehlbaum het concept voor een designmuseum en in 1987 nam hij contact op met Frank O. Gehry als architect voor het geplande museumgebouw. Datzelfde jaar ontmoette Fehlbaum via Ray Eames de latere directeur van het museum Alexander von Vegesack. Fehlbaum en von Vegesack ontwikkelden samen het idee van een openbaar functionerend museum vanuit het oorspronkelijke idee van een besloten privécollectie.
