De Reichstag is de zetel van de Duitse Bondsdag of federale overheid en met zijn nieuwe koepel een van de grootste publiekstrekkingen van Berlijn. Het kleurrijke verleden weerspiegelt de turbulentie van de Duitse geschiedenis sinds de 19e eeuw.
De Reichstag werd van 1884-94 gebouwd door Paul Wallot, omdat er een representatief gebouw nodig was om het parlement van de nieuw opgerichte Duitse staat te huisvesten. De inscriptie „Dem Deutschen Volke” („Aan het Duitse volk”) werd pas in 1916 toegevoegd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog, omdat Wilhelm II. er eerder tegen was geweest. Op 9 november 1918 kondigde politicus Philipp Scheidemann vanuit één van haar ramen de oprichting van de Republiek aan. Een deel van de Reichstag werd op 27 februari 1933 bij een brand verwoest: de exacte oorzaak is nooit geïdentificeerd, maar het vuur werd door de nazi's gebruikt om hun vervolging van politieke tegenstanders te rechtvaardigen. Na de oorlog werd het verwoeste gebouw in een vereenvoudigde vorm herbouwd van 1961-71 tot plannen van Paul Baumgarten, maar het werd niet gebruikt voor parlementaire functies.

De Brandenburger Tor, de enige overgebleven stadspoort van Berlijn, is het ware symbool van de stad. Omdat het zich in het niemandsland net achter de muur bevond, werd het ook symbolisch voor de verdeling van de stad. Na de val van de muur werd de poort op 22 december 1989 heropend.
De zandsteenconstructie, gebouwd van 1788-91 tot plannen van C.G. Langhans, heeft 12 Dorische zuilen en is gebaseerd op het propylaeum van de Akropolis in Athene. Aan beide zijden ondersteunen zes Dorische zuilen de 11 meter diepe dwarsbalk, waardoor de poort in vijf doorgangen wordt verdeeld. In 1794 werd het gebouw bekroond met de quadriga en godin van de overwinning gecreëerd door Schadow, die naar het oosten richting het stadscentrum gericht zijn. De Brandenburger Tor werd omringd door nog meer gebouwen die in de oorlog werden verwoest.
