De Philharmonie Berlin is sinds 1963 het muzikale hart van Berlijn. Nog steeds aan de rand van West-Berlijn toen het werd geopend, werd het na de val van de Berlijnse Muur onderdeel van het nieuwe stadscentrum. De ongebruikelijke tentachtige vorm en opvallende felgele kleur maken het tot een van de trekpleisters van de stad. De ongebruikelijke architectuur en het innovatieve ontwerp van de concertzaal leidden aanvankelijk tot controverse, maar het dient nu als model voor concertzalen over de hele wereld. „De ene persoon tegenover de andere, in cirkels gerangschikt in uitgestrekte, hangende bogen rond torenhoge kristallen piramides.” In 1920 schreef architect Hans Scharoun deze woorden als een visie voor de ideale theaterruimte. Vijfendertig jaar later ontwikkelde hij vanuit dit idee de grote concertzaal van de Philharmonie, waarbij het concertplatform en de muzikanten centraal stonden. Dompel jezelf onder in de geschiedenis, architectuur en akoestiek van dit fascinerende gebouw: met teksten vanuit verschillende perspectieven, historische foto's die de bouw van de Philharmonie documenteren vanaf de originele schetsen tot de voltooiing ervan, en andere interessante inzichten.

Het werd na 1864 ontworpen om te herdenken dat Pruisen de Deens-Pruisische oorlog won. Tegen de tijd dat het klaar was, op 2 september 1873, had Pruisen ook Oostenrijk verslagen in de Oostenrijks-Duitse oorlog (1866) en Frankrijk in de Frans-Duitse oorlog (1870/1871). Er werd een bronzen sculptuur van Victoria toegevoegd. Victoria was 8,3 m (27 ft) hoog en woog 35 ton. Berlijners geven graag bijnamen aan beroemde gebouwen. Ze noemen het beeld Goldelse, wat zoiets betekent als „Golden Lizzy”. Ze heeft ook de bijnaam „Chick on a Stick”.
