Het amfitheater is een van de grote architectonische meesterwerken van de oude Griekse stad Halicarnassus, het moderne Bodrum. Het dateert uit de 4e eeuw voor Christus en het bewind van koning Mausolos. Tijdens de hoogtijdagen van de arena had de arena een capaciteit van ongeveer 13.000 toeschouwers en werd het voornamelijk gebruikt voor gladiatorengevechten en toneelstukken.
Tijdens de zomermaanden organiseert het amfitheater een reeks concerten van lokale en internationale muzikanten.

Mausoleum van Halicarnassus, Halicarnassus, ook wel gespeld als Halikarnassos, een van de zeven wereldwonderen. Het monument was het graf van Mausolus, heerser van Caria, in het zuidwesten van Klein-Azië. Het werd gebouwd in zijn hoofdstad, Halicarnassus, tussen ongeveer 353 en 351 BCE door zijn zus en weduwe, Artemisia II. Het gebouw is ontworpen door de Griekse architecten Pythius (bronnen spellen de naam op verschillende manieren, wat twijfel doet rijzen over zijn identiteit) en Satyros. De sculpturen die het sierden waren het werk van vier vooraanstaande Griekse kunstenaars — Scopas, Bryaxis, Leochares en (waarschijnlijk) Timotheus — die elk voor één kant verantwoordelijk waren.
