Het werelderfgoed Zollverein — vroeger bekend als de „mooiste kolenmijn ter wereld” — en nu het bekendste industriële monument en centrum van de creatieve economie in het Ruhrgebied. Meer” 100 hectare grond in het noorden van Essen, schacht XII, schacht 1/2/8 en de cokesfabriek Zollverein. In 1847 werd de eerste schacht tot zinken gebracht en in 1986 werd de laatste steenkool naar de oppervlakte gebracht. In 1993 werd de cokesfabriek gesloten en in 2000 werden de gebouwen en apparatuur officieel op de monumentenlijst geplaatst. In 2001 werd Zollverein opgenomen in de lijst van UNESCO-werelderfgoed. De Villa Hügel ligt in de buitenwijk Bredeney in Essen. Het is de voormalige residentie van de industriële magnaat Alfred Krupp en zijn familie. Het gebouw werd voltooid in 1873 en werd gedurende de volgende zeventig jaar door drie generaties van de familie gebruikt als woning en voor representatieve doeleinden. Sinds 1955/6 worden hier regelmatig grootschalige internationale kunsttentoonstellingen gehouden. Als er geen tentoonstellingen worden gepresenteerd, kunnen bezoekers de historische kamers in het hoofdgebouw bekijken, een tentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van Krupp en zijn bedrijf in het aangrenzende gebouw, en ontspannen op het ruime terrein naast de villa.
