De Atomic Bomb Dome werd op de Werelderfgoedlijst geplaatst omdat het een gebouw is dat vertelt over de totale verwoesting veroorzaakt door kernwapens in december 1996 tijdens de 20e Conventie van het Werelderfgoedcomité van de UNESCO in Merida.
Tegenwoordig staat het symbool voor het motto „No More Hiroshimas”, een belangrijk symbool van de verwoesting die werd aangericht tijdens de bombardementen. Het is van generatie op generatie een symbool geworden voor de afschaffing van kernwapens en het belang van duurzame vrede in de hele wereld.

Gelegen in het centrum van Hiroshima, omringd door moderne gebouwen, ligt het kasteel van Hiroshima. Dit contrast geeft je het gevoel alsof je terug in de tijd bent gegaan.
Het kasteel van Hiroshima werd gebouwd door Terumoto Mori in 1589 en in 1931 aangewezen als nationale schat, maar werd vervolgens vernietigd door de atoombom. Het werd herbouwd in 1958. Tegenwoordig is het een historisch museum met als thema de samoerai-cultuur.

Shukkeien is een historische tuin die in 1620 werd aangelegd door een Japanse feodale heer. Sinds zijn bestaan heeft het de grote brand in de Edo-periode doorstaan, en later de atoombom, maar telkens werd het gereconstrueerd.
In 2020 vierde het zijn 400-jarig bestaan.
