Het Dolmabahçepaleis, gebouwd in de 19e eeuw, is een van de meest glamoureuze paleizen ter wereld. Het was het administratieve centrum van het late Ottomaanse Rijk en de laatste Ottomaanse sultans woonden er. Na de oprichting van de Turkse Republiek in Ankara verplaatste Mustafa Kemal Ataturk alle regeringsfuncties naar de jeugdige hoofdstad, maar tijdens zijn bezoeken aan Istanbul bezette Ataturk slechts een kleine kamer in het Dolmabahçepaleis als zijn eigen kamer. Hij verbleef, verwelkomde zijn buitenlandse gasten en maakte een praktisch centrum voor nationale, historische en taalcongressen en voor internationale conferenties.

De Hagia Sophia is een van de meest bezochte musea en meest prominente monumenten ter wereld op het gebied van kunst en architectuurgeschiedenis. Al in de 6e eeuw werd het door de Oost-Romeinse Philon ook wel „het achtste wereldwonder” genoemd.
De huidige Hagia Sophia is de derde constructie, uitgevoerd in een andere bouwstijl, ook al bevindt deze zich op dezelfde locatie als de vorige twee. Het oorspronkelijke gebouw werd gebouwd door de belangrijkste architecten van die periode (527-565), Anthemios (Tralles) en Isidoros (Miletus), in opdracht van keizer Justinianos. In de bronnen wordt vermeld dat de twee vooraanstaande architecten tijdens de bouwperiode elk 100 architecten onder zich hadden, die op hun beurt elk 100 werknemers hadden die onder hen werkten.
De bouw van de Hagia Sophia begon op 23 februari 532. Het werd al snel voltooid, ongeveer binnen 5 jaar en 10 maanden. Het werd vervolgens geopend voor een kerkdienst met een grote ceremonie op 27 december 537.
Het werd 916 jaar lang als kerk gebruikt, maar na de verovering van Istanbul door Fatih Sultan Mehmed werd de Hagia Sophia omgebouwd tot moskee. Nadien werd het 482 jaar lang als moskee gebruikt. In opdracht van Atatürk en het besluit van de ministerraad werd de Hagia Sophia in 1935 omgebouwd tot museum.

De Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı) in Istanbul is een van de grootste overdekte markten ter wereld met 60 straten en 5.000 winkels en trekt dagelijks tussen de 250.000 en 400.000 bezoekers. Het staat bekend om zijn sieraden, handbeschilderde keramiek, tapijten, borduurwerken, specerijen en antiekwinkels. Veel van de kraampjes in de bazaar zijn gegroepeerd per soort goederen, met speciale ruimtes voor leer, gouden sieraden en dergelijke. De bazaar is sinds 1461 een belangrijk handelscentrum en in de labyrintische gewelven staan twee bedestens (koepelvormige gebouwen), waarvan de eerste tussen 1455 en 1461 werd gebouwd in opdracht van Sultan Mehmed de Veroveraar. De bazaar werd enorm uitgebreid in de 16e eeuw, tijdens het bewind van Sultan Suleiman de Grote, en onderging in 1894 een grote restauratie na een aardbeving.
Het complex herbergt twee moskeeën, vier fonteinen, twee hamams en verschillende cafés en restaurants. In het midden bevindt zich de hoge koepelzaal van de Cevahir Bedesten, waar in het verleden de meest waardevolle voorwerpen en antiek te vinden waren en nog steeds zijn, waaronder meubels, koperwerk, amberkleurige gebedskralen, ingelegde wapens, iconen, parelmotten spiegels, waterpijpen, horloges en klokken, kandelaars, oude munten en zilveren en gouden sieraden bezet met koraal en turkoois. Een ontspannen middag doorbrengen met het verkennen van de bazaar, zitten in een van de cafés en kijken naar de voorbijgangers en onderhandelen over aankopen is een van de beste manieren om de romantische sfeer van het oude Istanbul weer op te snuiven.
