Buyukada is het stadscentrum van de negen eilanden van Istanbul. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 5.400 vierkante meter. De bevolking neemt in de zomermaanden 10 tot 15 keer toe. De meeste gebouwen worden alleen in de zomer als vakantiehuis gebruikt. Het eiland bestaat uit twee heuvels: de 164 meter hoge Isa Tepesi (Hristos) in het noorden en de 202 meter hoge Yuce Tepe (Aya Yorgi) in het zuiden. Wanneer het loof van Buyukada buiten de bewoonde gebieden wordt bestudeerd, is te zien dat naaldbossen (Pinus brutia Ten.) met mediterrane struikgewas wijdverspreid zijn. De enige boomsoorten die bossen vormen op het eiland zijn rode dennen. Aangezien het eiland aan de noordelijkste grens van het natuurlijke domein van rode dennen in Turkije ligt, is de bodembedekking erg ondiep en staan de bomen al eeuwenlang onder menselijke invloed, met misvormde en onvolgroeide individuele bomen tot gevolg. Het tweede type inheems blad op het eiland is mediterraan struikgewas. Mediterrane struikgewas is het meest kenmerkende plantenleven in het Middellandse Zeegebied van Turkije. De mediterrane struikelementen die secundair op het eiland zijn gevormd, zijn vrij hoog. Aan de andere kant hebben in de bewoonde gebieden van het eiland veel exotische planten zich aangepast aan de omstandigheden
