Over ons

Binbirdirek Cisterne is het tweede grootste waterreservoir in Istanbul, na de Basilica Cisterne. Volgens oude Byzantijnse bronnen werd het gebouwd in de tijd van Constantijn (Constantinus) in de 4e eeuw. Omdat de Binbirdirek Cisterne in de loop van de tijd is opgedroogd, wordt deze plek sinds de 16e eeuw als werkplaats gebruikt. 224 van de kolommen 212 bereikten het heden. De kolommen in de stortbak bestaan uit twee overlappende lichamen. Er zijn kapitelen in de vorm van een afgeknotte piramide zonder borduurwerk bovenop de kolommen. Het is bekend dat de Griekse letters die op de kolomlichamen zijn geborduurd, de tekens zijn van de steenhouwers die aan de bouw van de stortbak hebben gewerkt en de zuilen hebben uitgehouwen.
