Een klein en nu verlaten eiland, de thuisbasis van een imposant Venetiaans fort dat dateert uit de 16e eeuw, maar ook de locatie van de enige leprakolonie van Griekenland van 1903 tot 1957, die internationale erkenning kreeg door de roman „The Island” van Victoria Hislop uit 2005 en sindsdien prominent op toeristenkaarten is opgenomen als een bestemming die u zeker moet bezoeken.

Gebouwd tussen twee heuvels, op een strategische verdedigingspositie met uitzicht op de baai van Mirabello, wordt Lato beschouwd als de best bewaarde nederzetting uit de klassieke Hellenistische periode met zijn ruïnes die voornamelijk dateren uit de 4e eeuw voor Christus. De naam is afgeleid van Leto (Dorisch type van Lato), de moeder van Apollo en Artemis. Het oude Lato werd rond 200 voor Christus verwoest.
