Waarom kiezen voor onze bestemming?
De belangrijkste reden waarom het eiland zo'n uitzonderlijk heldere hemel heeft, is de ligging vlakbij de evenaar, maar ver weg van de invloed van tropische stormen. De lengtegraad ligt tussen 17º43'42" en 18º00'15" west, en de breedtegraad ligt tussen 28º25'74" en 28º51'15" ten noorden, wat het mogelijk maakt om het noordelijk halfrond en een deel van het zuidelijk halfrond te observeren. La Palma ligt in de passaatwinden. Als deze winden het eiland raken, worden ze naar boven gedwongen, en tussen 1200 en 600 m raken ze de thermische inversielaag en vormen ze een zee van wolken. Daarboven is de atmosfeer schoon en is er weinig turbulentie. Hoge wolken zijn zeldzaam omdat de wolkenzee de meeste vervuiling tegenhoudt om dit gebied te bereiken. Slecht weer, zoals regenbuien die vanuit de Atlantische Oceaan naderen of fijn stof uit de Sahara, komt zo zelden voor dat ze nauwelijks invloed hebben op het aantal nachten dat geschikt is voor de astrofysische waarneming.
