De archeologische overblijfselen van Kourion - dat in de oudheid een van de belangrijkste stadskoninkrijken van het eiland was - zijn van de meest indrukwekkende op het eiland, en bij opgravingen zijn veel belangrijke vondsten gevonden, die op de site kunnen worden bekeken. Het stadskoninkrijk werd gebouwd op de heuvels van het gebied en keek uit over de vruchtbare vallei van de rivier de Kouris en beheerste deze. Volgens archeologische vondsten zijn er aanwijzingen dat Kourion in verband werd gebracht met de Griekse legende van Argos van de Peloponnesos, en dat de inwoners dachten dat ze afstammelingen waren van immigranten uit de Argeïsche Zee. Het eens zo bloeiende koninkrijk werd uiteindelijk vernietigd door een zware aardbeving in 365 na Christus. Het prachtige Grieks-Romeinse theater - het middelpunt van de site - werd gebouwd in de 2e eeuw voor Christus en uitgebreid in de 2e eeuw na Christus. Het theater is gerestaureerd en wordt nu gebruikt voor muziek- en theatervoorstellingen in de open lucht - voornamelijk tijdens de zomermaanden - waardoor het een van de meest populaire locaties is voor culturele evenementen van hoog niveau.
