MUSEUM OF ART, ARCHITECTURE AND TECHNOLOGY
MUSEUM OF ART, ARCHITECTURE AND TECHNOLOGY
Museum
10 min
Launched in October 2016 as part of EDP Foundation’s long-lasting commitment to cultural patronage, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (maat) is an international institution dedicated to fostering critical discourse and creative practice that inspire new understandings of the historical present and an empowering engagement with the common future. Located on the riverfront of the historic district of Belém, in Lisbon, the EDP Foundation campus covers an area of 38,000 square metres and comprises a repurposed power station — the Central Tejo, an iconic example of industrial architecture originally built in 1908 — and a newly built complex designed by the London-based architecture studio AL_A (Amanda Levete Architects). Both buildings house exhibitions and events programmed by the museum and are connected by a landscape project by Lebanese architect Vladimir Djurovic. Drawing upon the layered history preserved in its architectural and artistic heritage, maat advocates for the museum as a catalyst platform to render discourse actionable and empower audiences to own their choices through the articulation of debate, the sharing of positions and the formulation of knowledge. With the aim of encouraging an open-ended and transformative relationship between cultural institutions and societal change, the museum simultaneously interrogates and celebrates the intellectual ambitions and the creative means through which we imagine (with art), inhabit (with architecture) and create (with technology) the world we live in — that is, the ways in which we constantly redesign our collective undertakings in respect of the planetary ecosystem we belong to.

COACH MUSEUM
COACH MUSEUM
Museum
1 km
The new Coach Museum emerges, not only, as a cultural site but also as a public utility space. In the words of the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha “the Museum has no doors and relates to all of its surroundings”. The project is more than a museum; in the end it functions as an urban infrastructure providing a public utility space for the city. Thus, two concerns coexist; on the one hand the primary need to expand the exhibition area of the museum and its technical support infrastructure, while on the other, the need to create additional attractions for the most visited museum in the country. Moreover, there was a need to bind one of Lisbon’s most prominent fronts, the Belém monument area, where the construction of the new building has created a new dynamism in the museum’s surrounding area, creating new public spaces and urban walkways in the city that are reminiscent of earlier times. The new Coach Museum building comprises a main hall with a suspended nave and an annex, which is connected by an overpass, enabling circulation from one building to the other. This layout creates a gantry like structure directed towards an internal square, where the old Rua da Junqueira buildings also face. The new museum encompasses premises for the permanent and temporary exhibitions, reception halls, and a workshop for conservation and restoration, a contribution towards the development of conservation and restoration activities of this unique legacy. New spaces have been provided for the Library and the Archive, as well as an Auditorium, which will allow for the organization of a number of cultural activities that will greatly improve the scope of the public programs offered by the museum. To accommodate visitors, restaurant services, a Museum Shop and a Tourist Information centre have been projected. Reference must also be made to the surrounding areas of the new building, specifically, the Museum Square, a free public access area intended for the development cultural and leisure activities.

Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the Tower of Belém (or Tower of St. Vincent) is an icon of Portugal’s cultural heritage spread across the world. It is one of the architectural elements punctuating the cityscape of Lisbon’s monumental riverside area of Ajuda-Belém. Built to perpetuate the memory of Lisbon’s Patron Saint, St. Vincent, the Tower was part of a tripartite defence system as it stood between the bulwark of Cascais and the fortress of S. Sebastião da Caparica on the opposite bank of the river. The Tower boasts a typical Manueline decoration with twisted ropes encircling the building and ending in elegant knots, armillary spheres, crosses of the Order of Christ and naturalistic elements.

St George’s Castle is unquestionably the most visible landmark of Lisbon’s historic center. Standing tall and firm above the streets of the old Alfama District, the great citadel was first built more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans. Since then, it has been developed by subsequent rulers of the city, from the Berbers to the Reconquista knights. Today it has mighty palisades and crenulated towers to admire, along with an encircling dry moat and other anti-siege features. Pass beneath the large gate here and notice the Portuguese royal seal, marking the country’s monarchic strength.
