Het Starhotels e.c.ho. - Ecological Contemporary Hotel - is een van de eerste hotels in Milaan die is opgericht om tegemoet te komen aan de behoeften van een kosmopolitische, ecologisch bewuste klantenkring. Het Teatro alla Scala werd opgericht, onder auspiciën van keizerin Maria Theresia van Oostenrijk, ter vervanging van het Koninklijk Hertogelijk Theater, dat op 26 februari 1776 door brand werd verwoest en tot dan toe de thuisbasis was van de opera in Milaan. De kosten voor de bouw van het nieuwe theater werden gedragen door de eigenaren van de kisten in het hertogelijk, in ruil voor het bezit van de grond waarop de kerk van Santa Maria alla Scala stond (vandaar de naam) en voor een hernieuwde eigendom van hun dozen. La Scala werd ontworpen door de grote neoklassieke architect Giuseppe Piermarini en werd op 3 augustus 1778 geopend met Antonio Salieri's opera L'Europa riconosciuta, op een libretto van Mattia Verazi.

De naam komt van een bankier uit Genua, Tommaso Marino, die het project van 1553 tot 1558 opdracht gaf aan Galezzo Alessi. De binnenplaats is rijkelijk versierd met beelden, ornamenten en trofeeën. Op de begane grond bevindt zich de „sala dell'Alessi” met zijn pittoreske versieringen en pleisterwerk, die na de Tweede Wereldoorlog zwaar werd gerestaureerd.
In het paleis is nu de gemeenteraad van Milaan gevestigd (de kantoren van de burgemeester, maar ook die van de loco-burgemeester, het voorzitterschap van de Raad, de secretaris-generaal en de algemene directie).
Volgens de legende werd Marianna de Leyva, vooral bekend door de bekwame pen van de Italiaanse schrijver Manzoni, zoals de „Monaca di Monza” in 1575 in het paleis geboren.
