De geschiedenis van Marseille speelt zich al 26 eeuwen lang af in de oude haven. Tijdens de Oudheid en de Middeleeuwen breidde de Griekse (Massalia), Romeinse (Massilia) en Middeleeuwse (Masiho) stad zich in de 17e eeuw uit op de noordelijke oever en in het zuiden. De toegang tot de haven werd voortaan bewaakt door twee forten, Fort Saint-Nicolas en Fort Saint-Jean.
Een van de iconische symbolen van de oude haven was de transportbrug, een metalen constructie die in 1905 tussen beide forten werd geopend en die helaas na de oorlog werd verwoest.
De oude haven werd in 2013 gerenoveerd (gemakkelijkere toegang tot de haven, minder verkeer, de Ombrière gemaakt door Norman Foster). Tot op de dag van vandaag is de oude haven het kloppend hart van Marseille.

Vanaf 1 juni 2011 nam Arema de verantwoordelijkheid voor de tours van Stade Vélodrome over. De beslissing werd genomen om deze bezoeken samen met Olympique de Marseille te organiseren.
Om ervoor te zorgen dat de tours soepel verlopen, wendden Arema en de voetbalclub van Marseille zich tot Cultival, een Frans bedrijf dat gespecialiseerd is in en bekend staat om het organiseren van rondleidingen van hoge kwaliteit. Daarmee heeft Arema voldaan aan een van de criteria die de stad Marseille in haar samenwerkingsovereenkomst heeft vastgelegd: het Stade Vélodrome het hele jaar door omtoveren tot een aantrekkelijke en gastvrije locatie.
