Het naburige eiland Delos (een UNESCO-werelderfgoed) is een van de belangrijkste mythologische en archeologische vindplaatsen in de Middellandse Zee, genoemd in Homer's Odyssey. Delos was een heilig heiligdom lang voordat de Olympische Griekse mythologie het de geboorteplaats maakte van de tweelinggoden Apollo, god van het licht en Artemis, godin van de jacht. Bewijs van bewoning op het eiland dateert uit 3000 voor Christus en Delos kreeg bekendheid tijdens de Myceense periode. De reputatie van Delos als heilig eiland trok grote aantallen toegewijden aan. De handel bloeide en maakte van Delos na 800 voor Christus bijna duizend jaar lang een robuuste handelshaven. Vanaf 478 voor Christus herbergde het de schatkist van de Delische Bond voordat deze werd verplaatst naar de Akropolis in Athene. Een klein museum tussen de ruïnes van de oude stad (waar ooit meer dan 25.000 mensen woonden) bevat veel belangrijke artefacten die zijn opgegraven tijdens de lopende opgravingen van de site.
