Palazzo Reale was het koninklijk paleis in het centrum van Napels, nog steeds het hart van Napels. Gebouwd rond 1600 toen Napels onder Spaanse heerschappij stond, werd het twee eeuwen lang niet voltooid. Binnen leidt een prachtige dubbele trap naar de koninklijke appartementen waar tegenwoordig het meubelmuseum van het paleis gevestigd is, enz. Mis de enorme 18e-eeuwse kerststal in de Cappella Reale (koninklijke kapel) niet. Het Palazzo Reale herbergt ook de nationale bibliotheek die duizenden papyrusrollen bevat die in Herculaneum zijn gevonden en de overblijfselen van een koptische bijbel uit de 5e eeuw. Het paleis is gelegen aan de elegante Piazza Plebiscito, het grootste plein in Napels en vernoemd naar de stemming in 1870 die Napels tot het verenigde Koninkrijk Italië bracht. Het paleis vormt één kant van dit plein, naast de koepelkerk van San Francesco di Paolo en de elegante ronding van Dorische zuilen.

De stad Pompeii was een oude Romeinse stad in de buurt van het moderne Napels in de Italiaanse regio Campania, op het grondgebied van de gemeente Pompei. Pompeii werd, samen met Herculaneum en vele villa's in de omgeving, grotendeels verwoest en begraven onder 4 tot 6 m (13 tot 20 ft) as en puimsteen tijdens de uitbarsting van de Vesuvius in 79 na Christus. Onderzoekers geloven dat de stad werd gesticht in de zevende of zesde eeuw voor Christus en werd ingenomen door de Romeinen in 80 voor Christus. Tegen de tijd van de verwoesting, 160 jaar later, bestond de bevolking waarschijnlijk uit ongeveer 20.000 inwoners, met een complex watersysteem, een amfitheater, een gymnasium en een haven.
