Ontworpen door Miklós Ybl, een belangrijke figuur in de Hongaarse architectuur uit de 19e eeuw, duurde de bouw van 1875 tot 1884 en werd gefinancierd door de stad Boedapest en door keizer Franz Joseph van Oostenrijk-Hongarije.
