Het belangrijkste plein van het historische Praag, werd gesticht in de 12e eeuw en is getuige geweest van vele historische gebeurtenissen. Naast het oude stadhuis met de astronomische klok en de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk vóór Týn, wordt het plein gedomineerd door de barokke Sint-Nicolaaskerk, het Rococo Kinský-paleis, het gotische huis aan de stenen klok en het monument voor Jan Hus.

De oudste brug van Praag werd gebouwd ter vervanging van de Judithbrug die in 1342 zwaar beschadigd was door overstromingen. De bouw van de nieuwe brug, oorspronkelijk Stone Bridge of Praagse brug genoemd, begon in 1357 onder auspiciën van Karel IV en werd voltooid in 1402. Sinds 1870 heet de brug de Karelsbrug. Het is gebouwd van zandsteenblokken, aan elk uiteinde geflankeerd door versterkte torens (Lesser Town Bridge Towers, Old Town Bridge Tower). Van 1683 tot 1928 werden 30 heiligenbeelden uitgehouwen om de brug te versieren, waarvan het bekendste het beeld van St. John van Nepomuk is.
