Dit bergmassief is vernoemd naar de lynx, in Kroatisch Iris, de meest populaire inwoner. Het beslaat een gebied van 64 km2 en ligt op de plek waar de Alpen en de Dinarische bergketen samenkomen en waar de Middellandse Zee geleidelijk plaats maakt voor de Pannonia-vlakte, combineert het bijna alle bostypen van de gebieden en bevat het talrijke planten- en diersoorten. Natuurliefhebbers komen naar Risnjak voor de schoonheid van de bergen, bossen, wateren en karst. De meest frequente bezoekers zijn bergbeklimmers, die de hoogste top van het massief de meest lonende uitdaging vinden. De top van Risnjak is in alle seizoenen even aantrekkelijk: in de winter, als het bedekt is met sneeuw; in de lente, wanneer de weiden eromheen veranderen in bloementapijten; in de zomer als het even kan ontsnappen aan de hitte in de nabijgelegen kuststreek, en in de herfst, wanneer de bomen baden in talloze kleuren. Naast de lynx, het symbool van de berg, zijn er ook bruine beren, marters en slaapmuizen. Risnjak is ook beroemd vanwege het fantastische uitzicht op de eilanden in de Kvarner Baai en de bergen in buurland Slovenië en verder naar de Alpen.

Het Trsat-kasteel is een strategisch reliëfuitkijkpunt op een heuvel 138 meter boven zeeniveau die Rijeka domineert. Het werd voor het eerst genoemd als parochiaal centrum in 1288. Op dezelfde plek stond een Liburnische observatiepost uit de prehistorie, die werd gebruikt voor het bewaken van de wegen die van het achterland naar de kust leidden. Deze locatie was goed voor de Romeinen om hun verdedigingssysteem op te zetten, de zogenaamde Liburnische limes, met als vertrekpunt de vestingstad Tarsatica — gelegen op de plaats van de huidige oude stad Rijeka.

Učka is de enige berg in het Dinarische gebergte dat zich uitstrekt van noordoost-zuidwest, loodrecht in de richting van de Dinariden. De steile hellingen met afwisselingen van rotsen, bossen en grasland en met spectaculaire uitzichten vanaf de toppen, talrijke waterbronnen en nederzettingen, de afzondering en de nabijheid van de zee maken Učka uniek en bijzonder. Deze berg is even prachtig om te bekijken vanuit het binnenland van Istrië, Rijeka of Gorski Kotar, als vanaf de eilanden Kvarner. Het is natuurlijk nog mooier om het van binnenuit te verkennen, wat niet moeilijk is omdat de hele Učka verweven is met een netwerk van bergpaden.
