Oorspronkelijk genaamd Mission San Antonio de Valero, diende de Alamo bijna zeventig jaar lang als onderkomen voor missionarissen en hun Indiase bekeerlingen. De bouw begon op de huidige locatie in 1724. In 1793 seculariseerden Spaanse functionarissen de vijf missies van San Antonio en verdeelden hun land onder de overgebleven Indiase inwoners. Deze mannen en vrouwen bleven de velden bewerken, ooit van hun missie maar nu van henzelf, en namen deel aan de groeiende gemeenschap van San Antonio.

De meeste Amerikanen kennen de klaroenroep „Remember the Alamo!” en kunnen me vaag herinneren dat het „fort” oorspronkelijk werd gebouwd als een Spaanse missie. Wat buiten het zuidwesten minder bekend is, is dat de Mission San Antonio de Valero, de Alamo, slechts één was van een reeks missies langs de San Antonio-rivier. Deze missies, opgericht tussen 1718 en 1731, werden niet alleen gebouwd om het geloof van de conquistadores te verspreiden, maar ook om meerdere doelstellingen van het buitenlands beleid van de Spaanse regering te dienen.
De beroemde Alamo is nu een historische staatssite onder het beheer van de Daughters of the Republic of Texas en dient vooral als herinnering aan de revolutie van Texas van 1835-1836. De vereniging heeft meer dan 300 leden, waaronder eigenaren en huurders van onroerend goed, maar ook buurtbedrijven en -instellingen. KWA wordt bestuurd door een raad van bestuur die elk jaar in september door de actieve leden wordt gekozen.
De wijk King William is rijk aan geschiedenis en culturele diversiteit. Het gebied omvat drie lokale en nationale historische districten, evenals eigendommen die individueel worden erkend vanwege hun historische betekenis. De buurt biedt bed & breakfasts, kunstgalerijen, restaurants en een bloeiende commerciële corridor die bekend staat als Southtown. Het KWA-gebied wordt begrensd door het Blue Star Arts Complex en de zusterwijk Lavaca.
