Alcatraz Island ligt in San Francisco Bay, 2,01 km voor de kust van San Francisco, Californië, Verenigde Staten. Het kleine eiland werd ontwikkeld met faciliteiten voor een vuurtoren, een militaire vesting, een militaire gevangenis (1868) en een federale gevangenis van 1934 tot 1963. Vanaf november 1969 werd het eiland gedurende meer dan 19 maanden bezet door een groep indianen uit San Francisco, die deel uitmaakten van een golf van inheems activisme in het hele land, met publieke protesten in de jaren zeventig. In 1972 werd Alcatraz onderdeel van een nationaal recreatiegebied en werd in 1986 uitgeroepen tot National Historic Landmark. Tegenwoordig worden de faciliteiten van het eiland beheerd door de National Park Service als onderdeel van het Golden Gate National Recreation Area; het is toegankelijk voor rondleidingen. Bezoekers kunnen het eiland in iets minder dan 15 minuten bereiken met de veerboot vanaf Pier 33, gelegen tussen de San Francisco Ferry Building en Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco.
