Het Mediterranean Palace Hotel ligt in het hart van het commerciële, zakelijke en culturele leven van Thessaloniki, dicht bij een van de meest pittoreske delen van de stad, de „Ladadika”. Het Museum voor Byzantijnse Cultuur wil verschillende aspecten van het leven in de Byzantijnse en postbyzantijnse periode presenteren: kunst, ideologie, sociale structuur en religie, en hoe historische veranderingen en de politieke situatie het dagelijks leven van mensen beïnvloedden. Tegelijkertijd maken de activiteiten van het ministerie van Onderwijsprogramma's, de goede structuur en werking van de conservatielaboratoria en van de opslagruimten voor archeologisch materiaal, de verstrekking van wetenschappelijke knowhow aan andere Balkanlanden, de organisatie van wetenschappelijke bijeenkomsten en conferenties, evenals de redactie en publicatie, het museum tot een bijzonder belangrijk centrum voor het behoud, het onderzoek en de promotie van de Byzantijnse en Postbyzantijnse cultuur. Sinds de opening van het museum in 1994 wordt jaarlijks een bulletin gepubliceerd, het eerste in zijn soort door een Grieks openbaar museum.

Het museum is gevestigd in een gebouw ontworpen door architect Patroklos Karantinos en is een voorbeeld van de moderne architectuurtrends van Griekenland. Het museum werd gebouwd in 1962 en kreeg in 1980 een nieuwe vleugel toegevoegd, waarin de vondsten van Vergina tot 1997 werden tentoongesteld. In 2001 en 2004, in de aanloop naar de Olympische Spelen van 2004 in Athene, werd het museum grondig gerenoveerd en werden de permanente exposities gereorganiseerd. Het standbeeld van Arpocrates. De centrale kamers bevatten exposities van de archeologische opgravingen die zijn uitgevoerd in Thessaloniki en de rest van Macedonië. In de nieuwe vleugel worden twee tentoonstellingen gehouden: The Gold of Macedon, met artefacten van de begraafplaatsen van Sindos, Agia Paraskevi, Nea Filadelfia, Makrygialos, Derveni, Lete, Serres en Evropos; en The Thessaloniki Area in Prehistorie, met materiaal uit prehistorische nederzettingen, daterend uit het Neolithicum tot de vroege en late bronstijd.
