Geboorteplaats van de dichter Torquato Tasso, daar geboren in 1544 en onlosmakelijk verbonden met de legendarische sirenes van Homerus die, gedwarsboomd door Odysseus, veranderd in de Li Galli-rotsen, door de jaren heen werd geregeerd door de Byzantijnen, Noormannen en Aragonezen, en binnengevallen door de Turken voordat het een periode van culturele, economische en sociale regeneratie doormaakte in de 18e en 19e eeuw, en werd ook een stop de rigeur in de Grand Tour. Sorrento is de favoriete bestemming van adel en vooral van kunstenaars, schrijvers en muzikanten die genoten van het milde klimaat en de prachtige landschappen en nieuwe inspiratie vonden voor hun werken. Sorrento blijft bezoekers uit alle hoeken van de wereld aantrekken. De illustere bezoekers uit het verleden, zoals Enrico Caruso, Ibsen, Benedetto Croce en Goethe, zijn nu vervangen door hedendaagse reizigers van nu die op zoek zijn naar het soort vrije tijd en ervaring dat alleen de geuren en kleuren van dit land hen kunnen geven.
