De bouw van het kasteel werd begonnen door koning Gustav I in de jaren 1540. Tijdens het bewind van koning Johan III werden de prachtige kasteelkerk uit de Renaissance en het stucwerk ontworpen, waarvan delen nog steeds te zien zijn. De gevel van het kasteel werd onlangs hersteld en kreeg de kleur die deze had ten tijde van de restauratie van Carl Hårleman. Het kasteel heeft een dramatisch verhaal, met veel cruciale gebeurtenissen in de Zweedse geschiedenis die hier plaatsvinden. Kunst- en architectuurreizen in het Zweeds en Engels worden in de zomer dagelijks georganiseerd.
