The upper floor of this stone building was used as the first female factory. The park honours Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who was the 2nd son of Queen Victoria. In 1867/68 he was the first British monarch to visit Australia on a tour of Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. However, on his second visit to Sydney whilst picnicking in the beachfront suburb of Clontarf on the 12 March 1868, he was wounded in the back by a revolver fired by Henry James O'Farrell. The Prince was shot in the just to the right of his spine, and was tended for the next two weeks by six Florence Nightingale trained nurses. Prince Alfred Park covers an area of 1.6 hectares.
