Nationaal cultuurmonument Vyšehrad

Een historisch fort gelegen in de stad Praag, Tsjechië. Het werd waarschijnlijk in de 10e eeuw gebouwd op een heuvel boven de rivier de Moldau. In het kasteel bevindt zich de basiliek van St. Peter en St Paul, evenals de Vyšehrad-begraafplaats, met de overblijfselen van vele beroemde mensen uit de Tsjechische geschiedenis, waaronder Antonín Dvořák, Bedřich Smetana, Karel Čapek en Alphonse Mucha. Het bevat ook een van de oudste nog bestaande gebouwen van Praag, de Rotonde van St. Martin uit de 11e eeuw. De oudste gebouwen in Praag bevinden zich in de Praagse Burcht. De Basiliek St. Martin, gebouwd van 900-950, en de kerk van de Maagd Maria, gebouwd in het jaar 870. Volgens de plaatselijke legende was Vyšehrad de locatie van de eerste nederzetting die later Praag werd, hoewel deze bewering tot nu toe ongegrond is gebleven.

Dit plein is het commerciële en administratieve centrum van de stad en de locatie van belangrijke sociale en historische gebeurtenissen. Hier vind je bioscopen, theaters, banken, hotels, restaurants, tientallen kleine en grote winkels en administratieve centra. Het plein werd opgericht tijdens de oprichting van de Nieuwe Stad door Karel IV in 1348. Tegenwoordig wordt het gedomineerd door het Nationaal Museum (1885 — 1891) en het standbeeld van Josef Václav Myslbek van de nationale beschermheilige St. Wenceslas uit 1912. Het Nationaal Museum werd in 1818 opgericht als „nationaal museum” door de ceremoniële verklaring van de aristocratie op 15 april. De collecties werden voor het eerst verzameld in het minderheidsklooster St. Jakub en in privéwoningen. Het Šternberg-paleis in Hradčany werd in 1819 het eerste permanente hoofdkwartier van het museum, dat voor dit doel gedeeltelijk werd uitgeleend door de Society of Patriotic Friends of Art. Tegenwoordig is het een van de gebouwen van de National Gallery. Momenteel wordt het gebouw gereconstrueerd en zijn de collecties te zien in het nieuwe gebouw aan de Vinohradská-straat, nr. 1.
