It furthermore shows our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.” Feedback from Green Globe auditor - Emilie Hagedoorn "Whether it is about being an inclusive and caring employer, a generous community member, respecting the historical architecture of the building or simply being creative with actions such as sourcing from local suppliers, reducing food waste, serving yummy vegan menus or saving water & energy Beurs van Berlage does all of this and more. "Our Super Store offers you all the chocolate you can handle. Taste all our crazy flavours, learn how serious we are about people. Make your own custom Tony's bar with our Unlimiteds machine, right there in the store! Amsterdam still is the biggest cocoaport in Europe, so we did not pick this magical place by accident. In early 1900's, cocoa was traded in the Beurs van Berlage. The Super Store is located right beneath the trading floor where that happened."

The history of Amsterdam is intimately connected with water. Its 165 canals were created over the centuries to stimulate trade and transport and reclaim land to expand the city. They continue define the city’s landscape and in 2010 Amsterdam's canal ring was recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site. Take a canal boat tour in Amsterdam. Besides providing a stunning backdrop to the city’s historical centre, floating down Amsterdam’s canals is one of the most memorable ways to discover the city. Whether you’re a first-time or frequent visitor, everything in Amsterdam seems a bit more magical when viewed from a boat.

The Royal Palace is one of three palaces used by the monarch, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix. It is the venue for State Visits, the Queen’s New Year receptions and other official functions, including the annual presentation of the Erasmus Prize, the Silver Carnation, the Royal Awards for Painting and the Prince Claus Prize. When the Palace is not in use by the monarch (Royal House), it is open to the public under the auspices of the Amsterdam Royal Palace Foundation. The Royal Palace is open to the public most of the year and attracts about one hundred thousand visitors annually. It is open daily in summer, otherwise from Tuesday to Sunday. The annual summer exhibition focuses on the rich history of the building and highlights a heritage dating back to the Golden Age. In autumn, the works of up-and-coming young artists are shown in a special exhibition held in conjunction with the presentation of the Royal Awards for Painting.

Around the year 1500, artist Jacob van Oostsaenen (1470-1533) was commissioned by the churchwardens to make new works for the Oude Kerk. His work is still here to admire, desecrated by the iconoclasm and worn by time. The tradition to order new work for the Oude Kerk from artists has never waned. Today, Van Oostsaenen has numerous colleagues in the Oude Kerk, from Joost van den Vondel and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck to Marinus Boezem and Christian Boltanski – making the Oude Kerk the biggest commissioner of art in the Netherlands. We present contemporary art and connect our time to the centuries yet to come.

The Kalverstraat is the busiest shopping street of Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. It is named after the kalvermarkt ("calves market") that was held here until the 17th Century. The Kalverstraat is the most expensive shopping street in the Netherlands, with rents of 2200 euros per square meter. The street begins at Dam Square and ends roughly 750 meters down near the Munttoren tower at Muntplein square. The "Kalverstraat" is one of the streets leading from Dam Square to Rembrandt Square. The street is one of the oldest streets from Amsterdam and now holds many international shops, making it one of the most popular destinations for tourists and the Dutch to do their shopping.

Hendrick de Keyser (1565-1621) was the architect of Westerkerk. Commissioned by the Amsterdam City Council, the church was built between 1620 and 1631. Westerkerk was not the first Protestant church built in Amsterdam, but it was the first biggest in the world for sure. Noorderkerk and Zuiderkerk were built for the Protestant service ealier, whereas Nieuwe Kerk and Oude Kerk were meant for the Roman Catholic mass.Westerkerk was built in the Dutch Renaissance style and in the form of a patriarchal cross. The monument has a rectangular shape, is 48 metres long, 28 metres wide and 27.5 metres high to the wooden barrel vaulting in the nave. Eye-catching is the bright, undimmed sunlight pouring in from every angle via the 36 large windows (the light is not obstructed by any adjacent buildings). This 'light effect' is further enforced by the whitewashed inner walls. Apart from the large windows, the church is also characterised by grey-white painted ornaments made of natural stone between the white plasterings. Pillars, arcs, joists, pilasters and the main frame of the lower floor are made of Bentheim sandstone painted dark grey. Since the Westerkerk was commissioned by the Amsterdam City Council at the time, the city arms are a recurring theme in the church. Both the nave and the two high side aisle bays are covered with wooden barrel vaults, forming groined vaults at their crossbeams. The remaining low side aisle bays have stone cross-ribbed vaults.

You will find there all sorts of tulips, narcissus, geraniums and many other types of flowers. At the Amsterdam Flower Market you can either buy bouquets, single flowers or bulbs. The bulbs are ready for export, so you can enjoy them at home too.

Anne Frank House
Museu
1 km
For more than two years Anne Frank and her family lived in the annex of the building at Prinsengracht 263 where Anne’s father, Otto Frank, also had his business. The Van Pels family and Fritz Pfeffer hid there with them. The doorway to the annex was concealed behind a moveable bookcase constructed especially for this purpose. The office personnel knew of the hiding place and helped the eight people by supplying them with food and news of the outside world. On August 4, 1944, the hiding place was betrayed. The people in hiding were deported to various concentration camps. Only Otto Frank survived the war. Nowadays, the rooms at the Anne Frank House, though empty, still breathe the atmosphere of that period of time. Quotations from the diary, historical documents, photographs, film images, and original objects that belonged to those in hiding and the helpers illustrate the events that took place here. Anne’s original diary and other notebooks are on display in the museum. In the multimedia space, visitors can go on a “virtual journey” through the Anne Frank House, accessing background information about the people in hiding and World War Two. A contemporary exhibition is presented in the exhibition hall.

Temporary exhibitions at the museum invariably connect in some way to Judaism. In recent years exhibitions have featured work by artists such as Andy Warhol, Jozef Israëls and Marc Chagall.

Artis, short for Natura Artis Magistra is a zoo in the centre of Amsterdam. It is the oldest zoo of the Netherlands. In addition to the zoo, Artis has a planetarium, a geological museum and a zoological museum. The zoo was founded in 1838 by Gerard Westerman, J.W.H. Werlemann and J.J. Wijsmuller (also known as the three Ws). It is commonly referred to as Artis, because the zoo has three gates with Artis Natura Magistra written above them (as shown on the picture). Usually only the first gate was open, so people who walked through that gate, looked what was written above it and saw 'Artis', thinking that the zoo was just called Artis. Soon few knew it as Artis Natura Magistra. Artis was the zoo where the last quagga was held in captivity before it died in 1883.

Given that we have to provide large numbers of guests with a meal within a short period of time, we are always looking for methods or even formulas to create less food waste. This includes preparing and presenting smaller batches, on-site preparation and “on demand”. We also want to get a good idea of the numbers and exact profiles of our guests prior to an event, so that we are better able to offer the right offer in the right quantities. The seasons and availability of products at our suppliers determine the final ingredients of our dishes and packages. In addition, we look for options to process unused food in the best possible way or to give it an alternative destination, without having to be disposed of as waste. We want to reduce the amount of waste where possible, based on the idea that what does not enter the building does not have to be removed. This means that we will encourage suppliers, customers and other relevant parties to always supply quantities of goods that are in line with the expected actual use. We also try to keep the use of packaging materials to a minimum. We also want to optimally separate waste within our walls, in order to give as much waste as possible a second (or third) life.
