A world-class airport reflects a world-class region. Welcome to the primary airport serving New England, and one of the nation’s busiest airports despite operating in the second smallest footprint among the top 20 major American airports. Surrounded by Boston Harbor on three sides, we make the most of our 1,700-acre footprint. The four passenger terminals, A, B, C and E, are self-contained, each with its own ticketing, baggage claim, ground transportation service, free WiFi, and food and retail options. The terminals are connected to the central parking garage by a walkway system, and to public transportation with a free shuttle bus system. The Silver Line to South Station in downtown Boston is free as well. In all, there are 94 gates with contact jet bridges and nine regional jet gates at the airport, and more than 40 airlines fly nonstop to more than 100 domestic and international destinations. The safety and security of the tens of millions of passengers who use Logan each year and the 17,000 people who work here are our top priority. We strive to be a leader in teamwork, collaboration and new technology to make the airport safer, more secure and more environmentally friendly.

Two centuries separate the creation of the Boston Common and the Public Garden, and what a difference that period made. In 1634 the Common was created as America’s first public park; it was practical and pastoral with walkways built for crosstown travel. Founded in 1634 Here the Colonial militia mustered for the Revolution. In 1768, the hated British Redcoats began an eight-year encampment. George Washington, John Adams and General Lafayette came here to celebrate our nation's independence. The 1860s saw Civil War recruitment and anti-slavery meetings. During World War I, victory gardens sprouted. For World War II, the Common gave most of its iron fencing away for scrape metal. Boston Common continues to be a stage for free speech and public assembly. Here, during the 20th century, Charles Lindbergh promoted commercial aviation. Anti-Vietnam War and civil right rallies were held, including one led by Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1979, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass. Frederick Law Olmsted never touched Boston Common, but his sons did. About 1913, their firm supervised the paving of walkways, the replenishment of the soil, and the moving of 15-ton trees. From a utilitarian common ground for activities like grazing, militia formations and public hangings, the Common evolved. Its peaks were leveled cows were banned and 19th Century Bostonians added trees, fountains and statuary. The Common became the park-like greenspace we know today. The park includes ballfields, a tot lot and the Frog Pond, which provides skating in winter and a spray pool for children in the summer. The Friends of the Public Garden is a non-profit citizen's advocacy group formed in 1970 to preserve and enhance the Boston Public Garden, Common, and Commonwealth Avenue Mall in collaboration with the Mayor and the Parks & Recreation Department. The Friends number over 2,500 members and many volunteers. The Friends have also produced a brochure detailing the park's history.
