O Forte Vermelho é um forte histórico na cidade de Delhi, na Índia, que serviu como residência principal dos imperadores mogóis. O imperador Shah Jahan encomendou a reconstrução do Forte Vermelho em 12 de maio de 1638, quando decidiu mudar sua capital de Agra para Delhi. Originalmente vermelho e branco, seu design é creditado ao arquiteto e foi reconstruído entre maio de 1639 e abril de 1648. Em 15 de agosto de 1947, o primeiro ministro da Índia, Jawaharlal Nehru, ergueu a bandeira nacional indiana acima do Portão de Lahori. [1] Todos os anos, no Dia da Independência da Índia (15 de agosto), o primeiro-ministro hasteia a “bandeira tricolor” indiana no portão principal do forte e faz um discurso transmitido nacionalmente de suas muralhas.

No centro de Nova Delhi fica o Portão da Índia de 42 m de altura, um arco semelhante ao “Arco do Triunfo” no meio de uma encruzilhada. Quase semelhante ao seu homólogo francês, ele comemora os 70.000 soldados indianos que perderam suas vidas lutando pelo Exército Britânico durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial. O memorial leva os nomes de mais de 13.516 soldados britânicos e indianos mortos na fronteira noroeste na guerra afegã de 1919. Durante o anoitecer, o Portão da Índia é dramaticamente iluminado, enquanto as fontes próximas fazem uma bela exibição com luzes coloridas.
