The War Museum was established by the Hellenic State in 1964 in order to honor all those who fought for the country's freedom. The relevant study was undertaken by a team of distinguished scientists, headed by Professor Thoukidides Valentis of the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A). On July 18, 1975, the President of the Hellenic Republic H.E. Constantine Tsatsos and the Minister of National Defense Evangelos Averof-Tositsas inaugurated the Museum. The Museum’s mission, as this was determined by its Establishing Act, is to collect, preserve and exhibit military artifacts and memorabilia, and to study, document and project the sacred struggles of the Greek nation from antiquity to the present day, in order to preserve the national memory and promote the historic continuity of Hellenism.

UNESCO Worlds Heritage List The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world. In the second half of the fifth century bc, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world. In the age that followed, as thought and art flourished, an exceptional group of artists put into effect the ambitious plans of Athenian statesman Pericles and, under the inspired guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts. The most important monuments were built during that time: the Parthenon, built by Ictinus, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, designed by Mnesicles and the small temple Athena Nike.

10 years have passed quickly, but they have left a strong mark on this new beginning for the Acropolis Museum. In October 2007, the path to the Museum’s opening commenced, with the onset of the transportation of the masterpieces from the old Museum on the Rock to the galleries of the new Museum, shuttled through the air by three enormous cranes. It was only then that the waves of doubt about the location and the choice of architecture for the new Museum subsided. The transportation of the exhibits became an international event that drew great global interest. On 20 June 2009, the Museum opened to the public and after 10 years the number of visitors has reached over 14.500.000. To offer a fuller appreciation of the exhibits the Museum has developed innovative digital representations of exhibits, discreetly presented next to the originals. The Museum also introduced modern technologies to narrate the adventures of the Parthenon, its dismemberment and the particular significance of its reunification. The presentation of the ruins of the Ancient Athenian urban fabric that were revealed on the Museum site has been optimally presented. Natural light reaches down to the architectural remains with the roads, houses, workshops and public baths, providing visitors with a strong sense of this ancient Athenian neighborhood. Since opening the Museum has been recognized by many international cultural, architectural and tourism organizations and rated as being amongst the first museums of the world. In all its 10 years the Museum has operated solely from the funds it generates on a daily basis thanks to the careful management and continuous vigilance of the administration and its services. Museum staff have worked with exceptional zeal and met the particularly increased daily demands of the Museum with success and the recent regularization of their employment status with the Museum constitutes a sound incentive for their continued contribution.

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value

The Benaki Museum ranks among the major institutions that have enriched the material assets of the Greek state. It is also the oldest museum in Greece operating as a Foundation under Private Law. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields and its more general range of activities serving more than one social need, the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) began its operation in 2000. Its permanent home is the former Fix brewery on Syngrou Ave., the reconstruction of which was completed in 2014. The building occupies 18.142 sqm. on a 3.123 sqm surface. The Museum’s constantly growing collection is formed around a very important nucleus of works by Greek and international artists, such as Jannis Kounellis, Stephen Antonakos, Gary Hill, Vlassis Caniaris, Chryssa, Mona Hatoun, Emily Jacir, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Kim Sooja, Nikos Kessanlis, Shirin Neshat, Lucas Samaras, Costas Tsoclis, Bill Viola, Joseph Kosuth, Pedro Cabrita Reiss, Costas Varotsos, George Lappas, Oliver Ressler, Gulsun Karamustafa a.o.

Τhe Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC. It was founded in 1986, to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Since then it has grown in size to accommodate new acquisitions, obtained either through direct purchases or through donations by important collectors and institutions.

The Byzantine and Christian Museum, which is based in Athens, is one of Greece’s national museums. Its areas of competency are centered on – but not limited to – religious artifacts of the Early Christian, Byzantine, Medieval, post-Byzantine and later periods which it exhibits, but also acquires, receives, preserves, conserves, records, documents, researches, studies, publishes and raises awareness of. The museum has over 25,000 artefacts in its possession. The artefacts date from between the 3rd and 20th century AD, and their provenance encompasses the entire Greek world, as well as regions in which Hellenism flourished. The size and range of the collections and value of the exhibits makes the Museum a veritable treasury of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art and culture.

And this journey outward does in fact take place, as dozens of performances that begin at the Onassis STEGI go on to tour all over the world — an example of an outward-looking procession of Greece at its very best — but more importantly, in non-material ways: through ideas, questioning, refutation.
